Debating KISS, Opinions on Amber Mark & RIP Sam Lay

This week, hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot talk about the age-old question: is KISS good? While neither of the hosts are too fond, they hear about the merits of the almost 50-year-old band and their imprint on the history of rock and roll music.

Three Dimensions Deep Amber Mark

Amber Mark Three Dimensions Deep

Jim and Greg review Three Dimensions Deep, the debut album from Amber Mark. They compare her favorably to Prince, but point out a few cringey lyrics.

The hosts have a lighthearted debate about the longform essay, “A KISS ARMY LOYALIST ON HOW KISS TRANSFORMED HIS LIFE AND HOW THE BAND SHOULD END IT ALL.” It's the first time KISS has been featured on Sound Opinions after more than twenty years on the air.

Obit: Sam Lay

Sam Lay was best known as Muddy Waters's long-time drummer, but Greg points out he had a zelig-like career. He popped up in unlikely places like backing Bob Dylan when he went electric at the Newport Folk Festival and giving a young Iggy Pop on-the-job training as a drummer before he formed The Stooges. Lay died January 29 at age 86.

Dear Listeners,

For more than 15 years, Sound Opinions was a production of WBEZ, Chicago's public radio station. Now that the show is independent, we're inviting you to join the band and lend a hand! We need your support more than ever because now we have to do all the behind-the-scenes work that WBEZ handled before (like buying insurance and paying for podcast hosting, ugh). Plus, we have some exciting ideas we'd like to try now that there's no one to tell us no!
