Whether it’s a stylistic choice or born out of necessity, sometimes great songs aren’t sung, they’re spoken. Plus, they hear selections from the production staff, review the new album from Spoon, and bid farewell to Mark Lanegan.

Obit: Mark Lanegan

lanny

Mark Lanegan first made his mark with the alternative rock-adjacent band Screaming Trees in the early 1990s. He went on to put out many quality solo albums and collaborations with other thoughtful artists. One collaboration that resulted in three albums was with Isobel Campbell of Belle and Sebastian. That project recorded a session for Sound Opinions in 2011 and we hear a track from it. Lanegan died February 22 at age 57.

Dear Listeners,

For more than 15 years, Sound Opinions was a production of WBEZ, Chicago's public radio station. Now that the show is independent, we're inviting you to join the band and lend a hand! We need your support more than ever because now we have to do all the behind-the-scenes work that WBEZ handled before (like buying insurance and paying for podcast hosting, ugh). Plus, we have some exciting ideas we'd like to try now that there's no one to tell us no!
