Director Mary Harron (American Psycho, Charlie Says) on Music in Her Films, Opinions on The National
This week, hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot talk with director Mary Harron about her films American Psycho, I Shot Andy Warhol, Charlie Says and her latest, Dalíland. They discuss her excellent use of music in her movies over the years, her start as a punk rock journalist and more. Plus, Jim and Greg review the latest album from The National.
First Two Pages of Frankenstein The National
On their ninth album The National are not in Springsteen anthem mode. Rather, they are sad dads quietly considering break-ups with the help of featured performers Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers and Sufjan Stevens. Jim and Greg both have positive reactions to First Two Pages of Frankenstein.
Director Mary Harron
Mary Harron is well-known as the director of the films “American Psycho,” “I Shot Andy Warhol,” “Charlie Says” and her latest, “Dalíland.” But like her colleague Cameron Crowe, she began her career as a music critic. Jim and Greg get deep into the musical choices Harron made in her films, including how licensing songs took up the majority of “American Psycho”'s budget.

Dear Listeners,
For more than 15 years, Sound Opinions was a production of WBEZ, Chicago's public radio station. Now that the show is independent, we're inviting you to join the band and lend a hand! We need your support more than ever because now we have to do all the behind-the-scenes work that WBEZ handled before (like buying insurance and paying for podcast hosting, ugh). Plus, we have some exciting ideas we'd like to try now that there's no one to tell us no!
